World of Father of Ruby
"I am Yukihiro Matsumoto, I believe keyboard can change the world" is a video about Father of Ruby -- Yukihiro Matsumoto. This video introduces us a father, a husband rather than a programmer. Yukihiro Matsumoto shared his understanding about programming in this video. Computer is not quite smart, it cannot understand human languages, so if we want computers to complete jobs we assign to them, then we need something both human beings and computers can understand. That's why we have program...

What is Asian UI design like from a Western point of view?
From a western point view, Asian UI designs are usually quite dense and compact. People in Asia are think more in detail when they start design something. They think these designs have following characteristics Dense tightly packed text Tiny low-quality images More columns than you can count Bright clashing colours and flashing banners Overuse of outdated technologies like Flash While the Western design is much simpler. They are treating the design as a whole, so usually we will see some quite...
Why Only Designers Can Create New Programming Languages
Attempts to verify the utility of languages stifle innovation. Christopher Mims 03/06/2012 30 Comments Compared to the versions that are hacked together late at night under insane deadline pressure, the programming languages to come out of academia are failures. Well, not all of them. History can speak for itself. Via UC Irvine computer scientist Cristina Videira Lopes, who deserves credit for any insight you might get from this post, which is a ...

Objective-C Is The Language
My good friend Brent Simmons invokes a historical email from Linus Torvalds, about his disdain for C++C++ is a horrible language. It’s made more horrible by the fact that a lot of substandard programmers use it, to the point where it’s much much easier to generate total and utter crap with it.Brent affirms his support while paying homage to plain-old C:But I will admit to an enduring love of C. I still think of C not as C but as the language.I loved C. Emphasis on the past-tense. A...

Why would I learn C++11, having known C and C++?
I am a programmer in C and C++, although I don't stick to either language and write a mixture of the two. Sometimes having code in classes, possibly with operator overloading, or templates and the oh so great STL is obviously a better way. Sometimes use of a simple C function pointer is much much more readable and clear. So I find beauty and practicality in both languages. I don't want to get into the discussion of "If you mix them and compile with a C++ compiler, it's not a mix ...

I don’t like the Ruby 1.9 hash syntax
There, I said it, I don’t like it. And I don’t know why you do either. I assume you like it anyway, everyone else I talk to seems to. My heart sank over and over again whilst I was at the recent RailsConf and saw respected rubyist after respected rubyist using the new Ruby 1.9 hash syntax in their presentations. I just don’t get it. But I’m not one to just moan. I plan to justify my feelings. Then maybe you can tell me why you do like it? My friend the hash rocket I ...
